I heard an interesting piece on BBC Radio 4 this week, on the subject of health care learning from the aviation industry in the creation of a safe operating culture. I missed the speaker's name but he made a really good point:
Safety is the way we do things around here?
- We tried training and educating our people to do the right thing but they would still sometimes forget or ignore their training and do something different, something less safe;
- So we wrote rules and told them that they must do it this way or else... but still they would deviate occasionally to a less safe method;
- It is not until it becomes the norm within the culture to do things in a particular way that it is universally adopted.
Safety is the way we do things around here?
