The Aviation Safety Network (ASN) has just released the airliner accident figures for 2011 at http://aviation-safety.net/database/year.php?year=2011 and although 507 people lost their lives last year, this number is significantly below the 10 year average of 764. I would hesitate to call it a 'good' year when so many have been lost, and we certainly can't take much credit for such a sudden statistical improvement but I hope this is the beginning of a new improving trend in accidents and losses as a result of all our combined efforts at reducing risk in the industry. If not then the 2011 figures are just a lucky accident...
