AVIATION INSURANCE CLAIMS FALL

http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-01-04/airline-insurance-claims-tumble-45-in-safest-year-ascend-says.html

Excellent news for the aviation insurance sector, which has struggled (and failed) to break even in recent years - claims fell 45% last year reflecting the significant reduction in losses over the previous years, as mentioned in my earlier post. However, the question this raises for all of us must be 'what brought this about?' It is no good patting ourselves on the back for a great year (not so great for 500 who died of course) if we don't know how we did it!

No doubt the continued spread of safety enhancing technologies like EGPWS and TCAS have made a significant contribution but on the other hand we know that technology and the interface with its human operators has been at the heart of some of the most tragic accidents in recent years. Have we done enough to address that issue alone?

Sadly we cannot assume that this sudden fall in losses and insurance claims is a new trend that will somehow continue into 2012. Maybe some fraction of it yes, but a significant proportion is probably little more than providence and there is no room for complacency within the airlines or their insurers. Safety risk management is all about continuous improvement and whatever we did right last year, we need to do it better this year and into the future.
