5 WAYS TO MAKE AVIATION A SAFER PLACE IN 2015

In the course of my work I look at a lot of aviation accidents (sad I know but it pays the bills) and it is hard to miss a number of very common factors – address these and aviation will become a safer place:

1.      If the approach is not stabilised go-around - a simple decision but it needs to be right every time;
2.      Do not abandon take-off above V1 – except in the most extreme and rare cases it is better to fly because you will go off the end if you try to stop;
3.      Learn to fly your aeroplane, especially close to the edge of controlled flight – know the indications of impending stall and respond correctly;
4.      Power/attitude/airspeed, know the relationships for your aircraft and apply the right technique if airspeed indication is in doubt;
5.      Don’t land long – especially on a wet runway and/or with a tailwind.

Simple but how to achieve them? Well the first is by rigorous application and monitoring of stabilised approach criteria, the second by introducing a variety of failures after V1 in the simulator rather than just engine failures, the third needs an additional manual handling simulator session each year (some airlines already do this), the fourth is a matter of learning backed up by practice and observation and the fifth; that’s just common sense isn’t it?
